Karen Nagel & Ade Patton

Karen Nagel

Karen Nagel, 29, of Chesteton, Ind., has had eight wins in nine spring races, including the Spring Fling 5K Ramp Run in Hammond, Ind. In addition, the Taltree 10 race on April 18 was the Road Runners Club of America's Indiana 10-mile state championship and was Nagel's first RRCA State Championship title.

What makes Nagel a standout this month is her first place finish in this year’s Valparaiso Progressive Marathon.

Nagel's progressive race times were 18:18 (5K), 1:25:13 (13.1) and 1:04:55 (10m). These race times add up to a final marathon time of 2:48:27. A champion of all three races, Nagel destroyed her time from last year, shaving off 42 minutes.

"Completing the Progressive means a lot. I think it includes every hill in and around Valpo. It means you've conquered something,” says Nagel.

Nagel, who teaches chemistry at Valparaiso High School, routinely gets "shout outs" from the principal on morning announcements.

"I try to be a role model for my students,” Nagel says.

Ade Patton

Ade Patton, a 30-year-old Hedge fund Analyst from Bucktown, runs for the same reasons most of us do, at least partially. “I run because of an insatiable drive to improve and challenge myself,” says Patton. “I also think running impresses my wife!”

Patton’s recent accomplishments include 9th place overall at the Wisconsin Marathon, with a time of 3:07:10, and a first place finish at Take a Step for Kids 10k, with a time of 38:51.

Patton hopes to run a sub 3:00:00 at the Boston Marathon next April.

With a handful of personal bests behind and challenging goals ahead of him, Patton passes on sound advice to beginning runners.

“Just like anything, you have to set audacious goals and work to them relentlessly. There are no shortcuts to running your personal best,” says Patton. “Also, focus on maximizing your own running abilities and not so much on the next guy. Remember, a frustrated runner is a tired runner.”
